Narrowboat traffic
Narrowboats at work in this day and age are almost exclusively used for carrying coal and diesel for the domestic retail market. This is a thriving business with boats covering most of the canal network.
Some narrowboats are occasionally seen on other duties, for example, carrying stone for tow-path works, and carrying building materials to properties where road access is a problem (in some cases, non-existent).
The average narrowboat is capable of carrying around 20 tonnes on a draught of about three feet. Large “Grand Union” type narrowboats are capable of loading a few tonnes more where the depth of canal allows.
